Goan Poee Recipe is simple sweet bread recipe made from whole wheat flour & maida. It is a very popular bread in Goa that is typically sold in the early morning hours on the streets. Most goans associate poee with very popular breakfast dish Ras Omelette. The spicy gravy of either chicken or chickpeas, which is often similar to xacuti makes for a great dipping sauce for the sweet bread.
Ingredients:
1 cup all purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp sugar
1 1/4 tsp dry yeast
1 cup water (warm)
Method:
- Mix all the dry ingredients above in a large bowl & slowly add warm water to form a dough. Add a little oil if needed & cover. Let it rest for 2 hours.
- After 2 hours the dough should have doubled in size. Transfer to a flat surface & punch out the air. Make sure you don’t knead it too much again.
- Divide the dough into equal parts till you have enough dough balls for each poi. With a rolling pin shape each dough ball into these 3-4 inch discs and let them rest covered for another 1 hour.
- Pre-heat oven to 225C & bake each bread for 8-10 mins flipping them over at half time till done.
- Serve hot with Xacuti or any other spicy gravy.
